Prologue Question

WOW Natalie Babbitt sure does use a LOT of adjectives in the first paragraph of this story to describe the feeling of a summer day!
Below please copy one of your favorite sentences and explain why you like her choice of adj. in that sentence.

Ex:  "There is no thunder, no relieving rain."  I like her use of the word relieving because usually I think of rain as something that annoys me or that ruins a day, but she just reminded me that one those REALLY hot days I look forward to the rain, and when it comes I feel relieved.

  1. "It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color." I like how she uses adj when ever she can. Also, in this sentence she uses the adj in unique ways, ways I would never have thought of using the adj.

  2. "The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot." I love her artistic and accurate description of the feelings and energies of the seasons! I think this is a FANTASTIC and enormously enticing first paragraph of her story. I rate it five stars!!!

  8. I really like how she uses ferris wheels as similes i think that it is genius!! personally I never would have found any connection between wheels and seasons, but she amazed me sooooo much! also the way she mentioned the three groups and told that they were connected, made me ask questions like:

    1)How are they connected?
2)What is the stranger doing? Is he going to kidnap anyone?
    3)Who are the Fosters?

and in a book, when you ask questions, you want them to get answered. so you read on! which is exactly what I wanted to do. I know I read the Series of Unfortunate Events, and I loved the series! but I was kind of disappointed in the end because the whole series was a mystery itself, which is why i read it, but at the end the main characters found a big book and it says that they read it, solved the mysteries, but then got more questions. but they did not say the answers. I was a little upset after that.
